Harkening back to the days of the Escape Nightclub, the Summer Youth Dance Party will be honoring that era while celebrating youth performances, dances and fun.

“From our perspective, it’s going to be a great way to celebrate and have a great time for the youth,” Rose Empress Jenuwine of The Imperial Sovereign Rose Court said.

The Summer Youth Dance Party will be held Sept. 11 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. between SW 11th and 12th on Harvey Milk Street. This event is being produced by Peacock Productions, Inc. and presented by The Imperial Sovereign Rose Court.  The show will be hosted by Rosebud XLIV Tokyo Planes.

Performers include the reigning youth court of Portland: Rosebud XLIV Tokyo Planes, Ms Leather XXXIII Celestia and Ms Lace XXXIII Ruby Reverie, as well as special guests.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity,” JenuWine said, adding that the Rose Court and Peacock Productions are involved in the same circles and this was “a way for us to utilize that strength and showcase what our organizations do. We also wanted to take this opportunity to highlight what our youth community does,” she said.  “How often does the LGBTQ+ youth community get to dance in the streets?”

JenuWine’s counterpart, Rose Emperor. Chance deValmont says he is filled with many mixed emotions about playing the Pride Plaza.

“I remember the old days when (Stark Street) was often filled with every type of person,” he said. “It’s been a long time coming to see the street honored for its history in Portland’s LGBTQ+ community.”

He added that he’s most excited about dancing with friends and family. Given the climate, Thomas-Chance said an outdoor party makes the most sense but it is also an all-ages event so everyone can enjoy it.

JenuWine said she’s looking forward to seeing the camaraderie within the community and seeing what all the youth have to bring to the party.

“Everyone always talks about how the youth are our future.  But my husband and I always focus on the fact that they’re not just our future they’re our here and now. How we are engaging them now will pave the way for what they’re doing later on.”

If there are any youth interested in performing, there is still availability. Contact emperor@rosecourt.org orempress@rosecourt.org to let them know that you’re interested and they will be in touch.

The Summer Youth Dance Party and other all-age events are being produced by Peacock Productions, Inc. at the Pride Plaza through the end of September.
